When Is SAR Given?
SAR should be administered immediately after someone is bitten or scratched by an animal suspected of having rabies, especially if:
- The wound is classified as severe (Category III by WHO), such as deep bites, bleeding scratches, or injuries near the head and neck.
- The patient has never received a rabies vaccine.
- The animal cannot be captured or its vaccination status is unknown.
Types of SAR Available
HRIG (Human Rabies Immunoglobulin)
Derived from human plasma, this type is considered safer and has minimal side effects.
ERIG (Equine Rabies Immunoglobulin)
Derived from horse serum, it is more affordable but carries a higher risk of allergic reactions in some patients.
At several healthcare facilities, including Sanmed Medical Uluwatu, HRIG is available to ensure optimal safety and effectiveness for patients.
SAR Must Be Combined with Rabies Vaccine
SAR is not administered on its own. According to WHO’s rabies prophylaxis protocol, SAR must be combined with the rabies vaccine as part of the post-exposure treatment. The serum provides immediate passive immunity, while the vaccine helps the body develop long-term protection against the virus.
